Guided implant surgery in Schiedam and Rotterdam: precisely as planned

With guided implant surgery your implant is planned digitally in advance and placed during treatment with a custom surgical guide at the planned position. This is how we transfer the plan from the computer to your mouth accurately. At 3D Tandarts, right at Schiedam Centrum station, we work with a CBCT scan, an intraoral scan and digital planning software.

What is guided implant surgery?

In a standard implant treatment the dentist decides the position of the implant during the procedure, based on the examination and X-rays. With guided implant surgery (in Dutch: geleide implantologie) the position, angle and depth of the implant are determined on the computer beforehand. A surgical guide is made from that plan. The guide fits on your teeth or gums and directs the drill to the planned position.

How does it work, step by step?

  1. Intake and examination: we discuss your wishes and examine your teeth, gums and jawbone.
  2. Scans: with a CBCT scan (3D X-ray) and an intraoral scan of your teeth we record the situation digitally. This shows how much bone there is and where nerves, the sinus and the roots of neighbouring teeth are.
  3. Digital planning: in dedicated software we plan the implant in relation to the desired crown. This is called prosthetically driven implantology: first the tooth, then the implant.
  4. Surgical guide: based on the plan, a custom guide is made and 3D-printed.
  5. Placing the implant: during treatment the guide directs the drill to the planned position, under local anaesthetic.
  6. Healing and crown: after a healing period the final crown, bridge or overdenture is placed on the implant.

What can guided implant surgery mean for you?

Guided implant surgery offers no guarantee, but it can help in a number of ways:

  • Accuracy: the planned position is transferred to the mouth with a guide during the procedure.
  • Insight in advance: you and the dentist can see beforehand how the implant will sit in relation to bone, nerves and neighbouring teeth.
  • Less invasive, where possible: when the situation allows, an implant can be placed through a small opening without opening the gum (flapless). This can come with less swelling and discomfort. Whether this is possible for you depends on the amount of bone and gum.
  • Crown-driven: because the crown is the starting point of the planning, we aim for a natural result that is easy to keep clean.

Is guided implant surgery suitable for everyone?

Not always. A surgical guide is a tool and does not replace the dentist’s judgement. In some situations another approach is better, for example when there is too little bone (sometimes bone augmentation is needed first), when mouth opening is limited in the back of the mouth, or when adjustments are needed during the procedure. If the situation during treatment differs from the plan, the dentist may deviate from it. We discuss in advance which approach suits your situation and why.

Guided surgery or “freehand”?

Experienced dentists can also place implants safely without a guide, based on 3D planning. A guide is an additional tool to follow the planned position, especially with several implants, with fixed teeth on implants (All-on-X) or when space is limited. At 3D Tandarts we decide per situation whether a surgical guide makes sense.

What does guided implant surgery cost?

The cost depends on the number of implants, the type of restoration and any additional treatments. For one implant with a crown our € 1,900 offer applies until 21 December 2026; the 3D scan and surgical guide are included where used. You can find an overview of the costs in our article on the cost of an implant in Rotterdam. You always receive a personal treatment plan with a cost estimate in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about guided implant surgery

What is the difference between guided implant surgery and a standard implant treatment?

With guided implant surgery the position of the implant is planned digitally in advance and transferred to the mouth with a custom surgical guide during the procedure. In a standard treatment the dentist decides the position during the procedure itself, based on the examination and images.

Is a surgical guide always needed?

No. A surgical guide is a tool we use when it adds value in your situation, for example with several implants or limited space. The dentist discusses in advance whether a guide makes sense.

Is a CBCT scan needed for guided implant surgery?

Planning a guided implant requires three-dimensional imaging, in most cases a CBCT scan. It shows how much bone there is and where nerves and the sinus are.

Does guided implant surgery hurt less?

It can, but it depends on your situation. When it is possible to work without opening the gum, patients often have less swelling and discomfort. The treatment is done under local anaesthetic.

Can I get an implant in one day?

That depends on your situation, including the amount of bone and the condition of the gums. Sometimes a temporary restoration can be placed straight away; often a healing period is needed. The dentist discusses this after the examination.

What does guided implant surgery cost?

The cost depends on the number of implants and the type of restoration. For one implant with a crown our € 1,900 offer applies until 21 December 2026. You always receive a cost estimate in advance.
