What is a CBCT scan?

CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. The scanner rotates around your head once and creates a 3D image of your teeth, jawbone and surrounding anatomy in a matter of seconds. The dentist can view this image from every angle and in thin cross-sections.

CBCT versus a conventional dental X-ray

A conventional dental X-ray is a two-dimensional image: structures overlap and depth cannot be measured. A CBCT scan shows the height, width and depth of the bone and the exact position of roots and nerves. This makes it suitable for questions that a regular X-ray cannot answer reliably.

When do we use CBCT?

  • Implant planning: measuring bone volume and determining the safest and most suitable implant position.
  • Complex endodontics: detecting additional root canals, fractures, resorption or inflammation around the root tip.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth and oral surgery: assessing the position of a tooth in relation to the nerve.
  • Assessment of bone, roots, nerves and the maxillary sinus before surgical procedures.

Only when clinically indicated

A CBCT scan involves a low but higher radiation dose than a single dental X-ray. We therefore only take a CBCT scan when it is clinically indicated and the information will influence your diagnosis or treatment. The dentist will always explain in advance why a scan is recommended.

Personal assessment

The dentist assesses your oral health and discusses your wishes, possibilities and alternatives before recommending a CBCT scan.
