Gum treatment in Schiedam: healthy gums, strong teeth
Do your gums bleed when brushing, do you have a bad taste or bad breath, or do your teeth feel loose? These could be signs of inflamed gums. At 3D Tandarts, we take the health of your gums just as seriously as that of your teeth. Examination, diagnosis, and professional cleaning all take place under one roof with us, right at Schiedam Centrum station.

Which gum problems do we treat?
- Gingivitis: red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Periodontitis: a deeper inflammation with gum pockets and bone loss
- Gum problems that keep recurring despite good brushing
- Maintenance after a previous gum treatment
How does the treatment proceed?
- Examination: we discuss your complaints, measure the depth of the gum pockets, and check if the gums bleed. If necessary, we take X-rays to assess the bone.
- Professional cleaning: plaque and tartar above the gums are removed.
- Deep cleaning: below the gums, if necessary with local anesthesia, using fine hand instruments and/or ultrasonic equipment.
- Laser (only where useful): in certain deep pockets, a diode laser can provide additional disinfection. The laser does not replace the cleaning but supports it where it helps.
- Check-up and aftercare: after a few weeks, we check the gums again and adjust the plan if necessary.
You will also receive brushing instructions and advice on interdental brushes or toothpicks, tailored to your mouth.
What will you notice after the treatment?
Many patients notice that their gums bleed less and that their breath is fresher. The gums may be sensitive for the first few days, with some pain or a little bleeding. That usually goes away within a few days. You will receive clear aftercare instructions.
How often is aftercare needed?
That varies from person to person. With stable, healthy gums, a check-up and cleaning every 6 months is common. If there is an increased risk, for example with periodontitis, smoking or diabetes, this is often every 3 to 4 months. We will draw up a schedule together with you.
Your own role
Periodontitis is a chronic condition: the goal is to keep the inflammation under control, not to cure it once and for all. Brushing well, cleaning between the teeth every day, quitting smoking if possible, and attending your check-ups determine the outcome.
Costs and reimbursement
The costs depend on how severe the inflammation is, how many parts of the dentition are being treated, the number of appointments, any laser support, and follow-up care. For adults, gum treatment is often (partially) reimbursed from the supplementary dental insurance.

Frequently asked questions
Gum treatment
When should I go to the dentist with bleeding gums?
If your gums often bleed, even if you brush better, or if you notice a bad taste, loose teeth, or receding gums, it is wise to have them checked.
Does a gum treatment hurt?
The deep cleaning can, if necessary, be done under local anesthesia. Afterward, the gums may be sensitive for a few days.
Can periodontitis be cured?
Periodontitis can be well controlled, but it remains a condition that always requires attention, even after treatment.
What is the difference from Dental Hygiene Express?
The Express is a quick check and cleaning for maintenance. With gum problems, a more extensive examination is needed first.
