Clear aligners in Schiedam: straighten your teeth discreetly

Aligners are clear, removable braces that move teeth step by step. At 3D Tandarts, we start with an examination of your tooth alignment, bite, and gums. If aligners are suitable, we create a digital plan. This way, you know in advance what the treatment involves. Our location at Schiedam Centrum station makes regular check-ups convenient.

How do aligners work?

You wear a series of clear aligners. Each new aligner moves the teeth a small step further. You wear each aligner for one to two weeks (depending on the plan), usually 20 to 22 hours per day. You remove them to eat and brush. Sometimes small composite attachments on the teeth or a very small amount of interproximal reduction between the teeth are needed to allow the teeth to move properly.

How does the treatment proceed?

  • Examination: tooth position, bite, gums, and X-rays if necessary.
  • Intraoral scan and digital planning: with the scan we create a digital plan, in which you can see how the teeth will move.
  • Treatment: you wear the aligners according to the schedule and come by regularly for check-ups.
  • Aftercare: after the treatment, you will receive a retainer (a fixed wire or a removable retainer), so that the teeth stay in place.

The duration varies per situation: from a few months to more than a year. The dentist provides an estimate after the planning.

Who are aligners suitable for?

Aligners are suitable for many people with slightly to moderately crooked teeth or gaps between the teeth. Aligners are not suitable for every case: in the case of a complicated bite problem or severe gum issues, a different approach may be necessary. The gums must be healthy first; only then do we move the teeth.

What is your role?

The result strongly depends on how faithfully you wear the aligners. Good oral care and attending check-ups are important. After the treatment, a retainer is needed to prevent the teeth from shifting back.

What do aligners cost?

The costs depend on the duration and complexity of the treatment. You will receive a clear estimate in advance. Aligners are generally not covered by the basic insurance. Supplemental dental insurance sometimes covers a part.

Alternatives to aligners

For minor aesthetic concerns, whitening, bonding with composite, or a veneer may be sufficient. For larger deviations in tooth position or bite, a fixed brace or a referral to an orthodontist may be more appropriate. The dentist will discuss the options.
